The Highland Approach
Learn to ACQUIRE a second language.
Language Tutoring and Self Study Optimization.
The idea behind my method here is to equip you will all the knowledge and skills that you will need to make acquiring a second language FUN, REWARDING, AND EFFECTIVE. Read on to learn about acquiring a language, comprehensible input, and having a new favorite hobby!
Language learning has become a popular hobby and many who are self studying are unsure about how to properly approach learning to get satisfactory results. Everybody learns differently and there is no one size fits all way to learning a language. We must ACQUIRE it.
What does it mean to acquire language?
Dr. Stephen Krashen famously coined this term. “We acquire language in one way and only one way; when we understand messages”. This means we have to engage with meaningful and interesting content that we can understand. This is called COMPREHENSIBLE INPUT.
In the traditional classroom everyone learns the same way. The same book. The same homework. Grammar exercises, long vocabulary lists, conjugation tables. I think all of us have been there before! The problem is that everyone does NOT learn the same way or at the same pace. We are all different. These tactics can be great if used correctly. However, most of the time it is employed in an uninteresting and monotone way. Language acquisition on the other hand is a way of life. Integrating your daily life, with your language of choice! Imagine this scenario.
You get up early on a nice sunny day and begin preparing your morning coffee as you listen to your favorite Spanish podcast. While enjoying this time outside you recognize several words in your podcast from a passage of a short story that you read yesterday. You jot these down in your note app and will review them later. As you get ready for the day, you try to see if you can recall the words for objects around you. For example, you remember how to say shirt, shoes, pants, and hat, but can’t remember how to say glasses or watch. You quickly translate these and appease your curiosity. Later, you are driving around town listening to your favorite music from several Spanish speaking countries. They all have their own style and unique sound and you are enjoying every minute of it! You recognize some words and maybe sing along a bit. You’ll learn the rest of the lyrics later that night. Finally as you relax after dinner, you watch a few YouTube videos from Spanish channels. Travel vlogs, cooking videos, or interviews. Whatever is interesting to you at that time. You’d be doing this in English anyway so why not from another perspective? This has been a regular day but you’ve learned so much and had some great experiences along the way!
As you can see from this example, you’ve integrated your interest in language with your daily life in a way that is enriching and exciting. You are saving time by using your second language to do activities that you are already interested in and would be doing anyway. You’re being curious and exploring new facets of the world we live in, and learning so much! Think of all the new songs, foods, friendships and memories you have because of the initiative that you’ve taken. At this point it doesn’t seem so much like you are learning Spanish…You are LIVING Spanish!
